Xbox 360: One Red Light Flashes on the Ring of Light

xBox 1 Red Light ErrorSYMPTOMS

You see the lower-right quadrant of the Ring of Light flash red on the front of the Xbox 360 console and get error messages in multiple languages.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the Xbox 360 console experiences a hardware failure.

THINGS TO TRY

Turn off the console, disconnect and reconnect all cables, then turn the console back again.

If an Xbox Hard Disk Drive is attached to the console, turn off the console, and then remove the Hard Disk. Turn on the console and test for the error. If the error does not reoccur, turn off the console and reattach the Hard Disk. Alternate testing with the hard drive connected and removed to see if the error occurs only while the hard drive is attached. For more information if the on-screen alpha-numeric error is E67, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

If an Xbox Memory Unit (MU) is plugged in to the console, turn off the console, and then remove the Memory Unit. Turn on the console again and test for the error. If the error does not reoccur, turn off the console and reinsert the MU. Alternate testing with the MU inserted and removed to see if the error occurs only while the MU is inserted.

If you continue to experience this behavior, contact Xbox Customer Service.
In the event that the agent is unable to help you resolve this issue, you must return the console to Microsoft for repairs.

Xbox 360: Two Red Lights flash on the Ring of Light

xBox 2 Red Lights ErrorSYMPTOMS

The two left quadrants of the Ring of Light flash red on the front of the Xbox 360 console.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the internal temperature of the console exceeds the acceptable limits due to overheating, and so on.

SOLUTIONS TO TRY

Let the Xbox 360 console cool.

Note: You may have to wait several hours for the console to cool enough. Do not turn on the console when the console is hot.

Verify that the console has sufficient ventilation and that the fans are operating. For more information about ventilation, see the “More Information” section.

If the two lights continue to flash red after you try steps 1 and 2, contact Xbox Customer Service.

MORE INFORMATION

To try to prevent this problem, use the following precautions:

  • Do not block any ventilation openings on the Xbox 360 console.
  • Do not put the Xbox 360 console on a bed, on a sofa, on a carpet floor, or on any other soft surface that may block ventilation openings.
  • Do not put the Xbox 360 console in a confined space, such as a bookcase, a rack, or a stereo cabinet, unless the space is well-ventilated.
  • Do not put the Xbox 360 console near any heat source, such as a radiator, a heat register, a stove, or an amplifier.

Xbox 360: Four Lights Flash Red on the Ring of Light

xBox 4 Red Lights ErrorSYMPTOMS

All four lights on the Ring of Light (ROL) flash red on the front of the Xbox 360 console.

LIKELY CAUSES

This issue may occur for one of the following reasons:

The audio-visual (AV) cable is not connected correctly or plugged into the Xbox 360 console.

The console is not detecting the cable. This issue does not occur if the AV cable is plugged incorrectly into a television, a stereo, or a VCR.

Note: This issue occurs only on Xbox 360 consoles that do not have a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) AV port.

THINGS TO TRY

Here are some things that you can try to fix the issue or to determine what the cause is. If you cannot fix the problem yourself, please contact Xbox Customer Support.

Make sure that the AV cable is connected correctly to the Xbox 360 console. To do this, disconnect the audio-visual (AV) cable from the Xbox 360 console, and then firmly reconnect the AV cable to the Xbox 360 console.

Note: When you plug the audio-visual (AV) cable into the Xbox 360 console , the cable meets slight resistance before it is fully inserted. If you do not fully insert the cable, either all four lights will flash on the Ring of Light, or no video may be displayed on the screen. You know that the cable is fully inserted when the largest part of the connector is almost touching the case of the console.

Check to make sure that the AV cable is clean

If four red lights continue to flash, unplug the AV cable from the back of the console. Then, try wiping the metal area of the AV cable that plugs into the console. Do this by using a dry, soft, clean, chemical-free cloth. The metal area of the cable is the end that plugs into the console. Clean and wipe the metal area thoroughly, and then plug in the AV cable again.

Try another AV cable

If the AV cable is connected correctly but the four red lights are still flashing, try using a different AV cable if you have one available.

If none of these steps resolved your issue, your console may have to be repaired. For information about how to start the repair process online, please visit Xbox Support, and then click Console Repair? in the upper-right section of the Web page.
